Target Language
The language or regional dialect of the country, for which the product is intended.
Technical Terminology
Specialized vocabulary of a profession or of some other activity to which a group of people dedicate significant parts of their lives (for instance, hobbies or a particular segment of industry).Technical terminology evolves due to the need for experts in a field to communicate with precision and brevity.
Technical Translation
The translation of technical texts (manuals, instructions, etc.), or more specifically, texts that contain a high amount of terminology, that is, words or expressions that are virtually used only within a specific field, or describe said field in great detail.
TEP (Translate, Edit, Proof)
These are the main components of the process of translating the text elements (software strings or text files). After initial translation the texts are edited and proofread.
Terminology Management
Preparation of a terminology list that includes terms and phrases related to the product, in both the original and the target languages. The process includes compilation of terms and phrases, translation of this material, and two reviews: 1) The linguistic review is intended to assure linguistic consistency and correctness. 2) The professional review is intended to assure that the translated material is accepted as viable and proper terms in the target-language community of the prospective software users. Preparation of a terminology list is usually specific to each customer and product.

Text Extraction
The process of pulling translatable strings from the source software files and putting them into a text file for translation.
TMX (Translation Memory eXchange)
TMX is the vendor-neutral open XML standard for the exchange of Translation Memory (TM) data created by Computer Aided Translation (CAT) tools. The purpose of TMX is to allow easier exchange of translation memory data between tools and/or translation vendors with little or no loss of critical data during the process.
Traditional Chinese
A Chinese character set used in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau. This set is consistent with the original Chinese ideographic form that is several thousand years old.

TM (Translation Memory)
A special database that contains pairs of text fragments in source and target languages. This term also refers to the software that enables usage of such a database in translators' editing environment. Building a TM is time-consuming, but has the advantage of enabling reuse of the translations in subsequent projects, leading to lower costs and improved consistency. Management of TMs is closely related to Terminology Management.
Translation
The process of converting text from a source language to a target language. An understanding of the context and meaning in the source language must be established in order to convey the same message in the target language.
Translation Portal
A Web site or service that offers a broad array of resources via the Internet, thus providing a marketplace for translation agencies, freelance translators and customers to exchange services.
TU (Translation Unit)
A segment of a text, which the translation tool treats as a single cognitive unit for the purposes of establishing equivalence. The translation unit may be a single word, or it may be a phrase, one or more sentences, or even a larger unit. Different instances of a translation unit in a text may have different translations. |
